After School Tutoring Programs
Program Description
Our After School Program through the Bakersfield Recreation Department includes
some time for
homework and academic tutoring, along with a variety of craft and athletic opportunities.
This is not
supervised by school personnel, however materials are given to the program by
the school. The program
runs Monday through Friday, beginning after school and running until 4:30 p.m.
(3:30 p.m. on Thursdays)
Hills School also provides an after school tutoring program for students who
have not yet achieved grade
level academic levels of performance. Supplementary materials and resources
at the student’s
instructional level provide the basic curriculum for tutoring. The school “bookroom”
carries a wide
variety of books at many reading levels and with a wide range of interests.
The focus is on improving
reading skills in order to master curriculum and state and district standards.
Students in grades 1 st – 5th
grades are tutored in groups of 8 to 10 after school four days a week.
In addition, Hills School is part of the Community Reading Program as organized
by the Kern County
Superintendent of Schools Office. Teams comprised of representatives from the
Bakersfield Californian,
Department of Probation, and the City Council visit the school and tutor students
for one hour per week
during the regular school day.
How does my child qualify for this program?
All students in grades 1 through 5 are welcome in the program. Applications
are taken on a first come,
first serve basis by the Bakersfield Recreation Department. The first 80 students
are admitted and the
remaining students are put on a waiting list until an opening occurs.
Students are recommended for the After School Tutoring program by their individual
teachers, based
upon academic performances in the classrooms, as well as on the SAT/9 scores.
Community tutors are placed in second grade classrooms and are used to help
tutor small groups or oneon-
one, as the teachers deem appropriate.
